Fat Tire Sign on "Aged" Wood

This summer when we were on vacation, we found this free poster in a store.  We loved the look of it and wanted to make something fun for the Game Room.

I started by finding new, beat up fence boards from Lowes. My husband glued them together.

I then applied my trusty apple cider vinegar and steel wool trick to 'age' the boards.   It's so easy.  Just let the pieces of steel wool soak in the apple cider vinegar either for a few minutes or even overnight, then wipe the vinegar on the boards.  These looked 'aged' in two coats!

After one coat...

After the second coat. (about an hour after starting)

At the ends, where the cuts were made, I used a drywall knife and made the edges look torn up. I then dabbed on more of the apple cider vinegar to age those cuts.

We used a spray adhesive to get the poster to stick to the boards.

A simple hanger on the back and free art was ready for the wall!

Welcome Sign

I made this Welcome sign using a birdcage graphic from  The Graphics Fairy, Citrasolv, a fence board that I aged and a piece of metal from Hobby Lobby.

I started with a fence board that my husband glued up.  I sanded it, but not too well.  You will see later that I should've sanded much better to get all of the glue off!

I lightly applied Citrasolv (purchased at Whole Foods)  with a tissue until the graphic showed through.  I then used the back of a spoon to rub it into the wood.  (I've used Citrasolv on several projects and have found it to adhere most clearly when applying it lightly, then using the back of a spoon to rub it in)

I rubbed apple cider vinegar on the board with steel wool.  It took two coats to look nice and aged.  You can see my original post about aging wood HERE.   You can see the light spots here where the vinegar would not adhere to the wood due to the glue spots.

I kept trying to sand those spots off, but it just wouldn't work, so what's a girl to do???  Turn the board over and try again!

My husband made a frame for it out of a fence board as well.

I added this metal "Welcome" piece I found at Hobby Lobby, but wanted it black, so painted it first.

I added hooks and wire to the back.

I screwed the Welcome piece onto the front and was done.

Thanks so much for coming by!

Rustic Take on the American Flag

I love flags.  A few months ago I made one similar to Layla's at The Lettered Cottage. You can see the one I made HERE,  I thought it'd be neat to make another one, this time using my faux-aged wood technique.

I started with a 3 1/2" fence board from Lowes.

I applied Apple Cider Vinegar with steel wool.  As I've done with my other projects, I put two coats on, as the first coat generally looks spotty....

After I got the boards the way I wanted them, I attached a couple of pieces to the back to hold everything together.  I then attached two hooks so I could hang it on the wall.

After everything was attached, I glued six little starfish on with superglue.  I purchased the starfish on ebay.

Be sure to do ALL of the assembly before attaching the starfish as they can be fragile.

And here's the finished product.  It was such a simple and inexpensive way to add some fun to my wall.

Thanks for visiting!
